This post is all about the best affordable DIY bedroom organization ideas.

How do I organize a small bedroom? Let’s start by going over some general tips for keeping a small bedroom organized and tidy.

1. Be mindful of overconsumption

Before organizing what you already own, take note of your current relationship towards shopping.

This can be a large topic to explore but it is important to ensure we are only buying what we need. The less we own the less we need to organize and clean.

If you have a small bedroom, using minimalist principles to not overbuy will be a life changing way to stay organized!

2. Start with decluttering your bedroom

There is no need to waste time organizing items you don’t use or don’t need.

Start your bedroom organization journey by going through your clothes, books, shoes etc. to make piles for donation, selling, upcycling or gifting to a friend.

3. Buy or upcycle smart organization products

There will be some links to organization products for your room on this list but I encourage you to use what you already have or upcycle it in a way that it can have a second life.

You can also thrift bedroom storage containers and organizers. More on this later!

4. Buy organizers made from natural materials

If you do buy brand-new room organizers, try to choose items that are made from durable materials. This will help them to last longer which will save you money in the long run.

For example, opt for wood drawer organizers over plastic!

5. Ensure every piece of furniture has smart storage options

Multi-purpose furniture will help you save money and space in your small bedroom.

For example, don’t buy a bedside table that doesn’t have storage drawers underneath.

6. Dispose of bedroom clutter responsibly

It is so easy to just dump your bedroom clutter in the trash when you have decided you don’t need it anymore.

This puts a lot of stress on our planet and it is basically throwing your money away. At one point you paid for that item so you may as well sell it and make some money back or donate it.

6. Maintain a tidy bedroom since it helps it to not feel so crowded

Once you read through this article and finish your decluttering and organization process the work is not over!

Try your best to stay on top of decluttering by doing so at least one per month.

30 Genius DIY Bedroom Organization Ideas

1. Underbed storage

If your bed is lifted off the ground, you may as well use the space under it for storage.

You can use storage bags or plastic bins. These wooden bins have wheels which makes getting your items more easily accessible.

2. Bookshelves

A corner organizer book shelf or a rotating book shelf are the ultimate space-saving ideas for your small bedroom. They take up much less space then a bulky bookcase will.

If you can’t find these bookshelves, here are some other ideas for organizing your favorite books in your room.

3. Storage bench for hidden storage

Extend the length of your bed with a storage bench that can be used as extra storage for blankets or seasonal clothes.

It can also be used as an extra seating area. You can simply buy a bench and add baskets underneath or a regular storage bench and add cushions on top.

4. Bedside pockets

A bedside caddy is super popular if you live in a dorm room but anyone can use them.

They are the perfect storage option for small items like glasses, books, sleep mask etc. There are tons of DIY bedside pockets that you can make or buy in your favorite patterns.

5. Floating shelves for vertical space

Making your own shelves can be really affordable if you use some reclaimed wood and a can of paint!

Floating shelves help to ensure that you use all of your wall space rather than your floor space. You can even add cute little thrifted boxes to hide clutter.

6. Maximize vertical space

This is kind of a general tip but be sure to use the vertical space in your room to save floor space.

Wall organizers, floating shelves, and corkboards can help to make the most of your wall space.

7. Use drawer organizers

Honeycomb organizers for drawers are wonderful and easy to assemble.

If you can’t get those you can use old shoe boxes or cardboard to organize drawers for things like bathing suits and socks. No one will see it so no judgment!

8. Bedside table bar cart

Swap your traditional nightstand for a slender bar cart. This is the perfect bedside table for a small room because they can scoot around if you need to rearrange things and they have three layers of shelving to fit any small items.

They are great for a catch-all area and provide easy access to your most used items.

9. Thrifted plastic bins for seasonal clothes

Again, try to get second-hand items as much as you can! This will help you to save a ton of money and they can be reused for years to come.

Plastic bins are a great way to keep your off-season clothes nice and safe from moisture or bugs. When you put away your seasonal clothes you will have plenty of extra space to access the things you use frequently.

10. Beauty products organization

It is so easy to overspend in this category! There is truly no one size fits all for the best way to organize your beauty products.

The one tip I have is to ensure that your makeup is not expired. It is so easy to accidentally hold onto makeup for too long and then you end up with WAY more than you need and it can irritate your skin.

11. Collapsable cloth laundry basket

Opt for a collapsable laundry basket rather than a plastic hamper.

You can store it in your closet or under your bed to maximize floor space. This will help you to save a bunch of room rather than a clunky laundry basket.

12. Back of a door organizer

If you are not able to drill into your walls then using an organizer on the back of your door will be your best bet! Most door organizers are used for shoe storage but use it for whatever you want!

It’s a great place to organize jewelry, socks, cleaning supplies, craft supplies etc. Organization for a small bedroom takes some creativity.

13. Fold clothes properly if you have a small closet

This tip is 100% free and will make you feel so much better everytime you open up your drawers or small closet.

Sometimes we don’t need to buy a fancy new organizer but take care of what we already have a bit better. No judgment. I can throw stuff in drawers as well but try your best to fold things as soon as they are cleaned!

14. Bed risers

If you have a loft bed then you have so much extra storage underneath your bed to store stuff.

If not, bed risers are a low-cost way to lift your bed even just a bit to be able to store more stuff underneath. This is the perfect place to put items you may not use often.

15. Use a nightstand for storage

Make sure that your furniture is multipurpose. Instead of buying a nightstand with a small drawer, try to find one that has deep drawers where you can store extra stuff.

16. Closet

If your room is already small it is so easy to stuff your closet with random stuff.

Be sure to use closet organizers like shoe racks, hanging shelves, and multi-level hangers to use up all of the space efficiently in your closet. If possible you can add a second rod in your closet to hang double the amount of clothes!

A closet system can be pricey so just use a few different organizers to make your unique closet work for you.

17. Corner desk

Make the most of every inch of your room! I didn’t even know these existed until researching for this post but now I want one!

These take up way less space and give your room an extra “zone” so that it feels bigger even if it isn’t. Studying in your bed can only last so long before you fall asleep!

18. Open clothes rack if you don’t have a bedroom closet

Another way to create an extra zone in your room is by using a clothes rack to hang items that won’t fit into drawers.

You can even use a clothes rack as a room divider.

19. Thrifted baskets

A major money saver is buying baskets, containers and organizers secondhand.

All they need is some soap and water and some time to dry in the sun and you’re good to go!

20. Small items in shoe boxes

Don’t throw out your shoe boxes! Even if you don’t want to store your shoes in them you can repurpose them to use in other areas of your room to store items you may not use as much.

You can even decorate them with paint of stickers so they match your room decor.

21. Utilize free space

If you’re lucky enough to have a guest room then you may as well use it to store stuff if you can’t fit it all into the master bedroom. May as well use the space you have!

22. Headboard with shelving

A headboard bed frame may be one of the more pricey ideas on the list but it depends on how you do it.

If you use reclaimed wood then it could be a cheap DIY project. Adding in storage above your bed is once again a wonderful way to utilize vertical storage space.

23. Use a vintage locker

This tip may be a long shot and might only work for certain room decor styles but vintage lockers are adorable and will give your room that nostalgic feel.

Maybe even add some cute magnets for old-time’s sake!

24. Leaning ladder for blankets, scarves, bags and other accessories

A small ladder can actually fit a lot of items if you stack everything correctly!

Whether you want to put extra blankets, your outfit for the next day, or your work bag, a ladder is perfect for grab-and-go items and keeps them off the floor.

25. Space saver bags

I don’t love that these are made of 100% plastic but they do help preserve your clothes and keep them organized.

You can squish so much clothing in these bags and they can slide under your bed or on the back of your closet.

Be careful with them to ensure that they don’t rip. That way you can reuse them again and again. If I find a more eco friendly version of this product I will update this post (:

26. Put your dresser in your closet

If you have a bulky dresser, rather than it taking up floor space, go ahead and slide it into your closet. You can then stack organizer bins on top of it for more strategic storage space.

27. Use a bed tray if you don’t have space for a desk

If you are truly working with minimal space, a desk might not be an option for you. Instead pick up a bed tray that you can use as a mini desk. You can either sit in your bed or on the floor.

These are pretty easy to make yourself with a couple boards or pick one up from your local craft supply store.

28. Use a floor-length mirror for the room to feel bigger

Mirrors, especially floor length mirrors can make your room feel much bigger than it actually is. This isn’t really an organization idea but just an easy way for your room to feel more spacious and cohesive.

A really fun DIY project is adding framing around your mirror or painting the frame for a unique flair.

29. Minimize items you don’t use much

Again, try to be mindful of the items in your room that you use on a daily and weekly basis. Can you find ways to dwindle down your items so you feel less overwhelmed.

For example, instead of using an alarm clock you can set an alarm on your phone! One more item you don’t really need.

30. Use a basket as a catch all area

Anything can go in this basket and then at the end of the day or week, you can empty the basket by putting everything away.

This will help to keep clutter off the ground piling up on furniture. It’s kind of like a laundry basket for random everyday items.

How do I organize my bedroom on a budget?

To organize your room on a budget you should prioritize using items you already own. You can always upcycle them in a way that gives them new life and fits your current room decor style.

Don’t feel pressured to go out and buy a bunch of new organizers! You can do a lot with just a few bins and baskets after mapping out a plan for how you want to store things.

Lastly, buying second-hand, thrifting, accepting hand-me-downs and shopping at overstock stores will save you a bunch of money! There really is no need to buy brand new items when there are second-hand items that just need to be sanitized.

I did include some links to new items if you are having trouble thrifting exactly what you are looking for. Making more sustainable choices is a balance so don’t be too hard on yourself if everything is not plastic free.
