4 Surprising Foods You Can Regrow From Kitchen Scraps

Have you ever wished to never go to the grocery store again? I may have found your solution! Well, at least for a few items.

Being able to grow your own food at home saves you money, gas to go to the store and helps you feel more connected to your food.

I suggest buying organic produce that comes package free (no plastic wrapper or containers). If the price seems steep just know you will make your money back by regrowing them anyways.

Follow these simple steps to start growing your own food at home!

What you will need:

  • water
  • cups to put the starters in
  • counter space to leave them for a few days to a week
  • sunshine
  • your chosen fruit or vegetable (always remember to rinse your produce when brining it home)
Reused an old jar for it to sit in

Celery

  1. Cut off the bottom of the stalk (about 2-3 inches).
  2.  Fill a cup with a few centimeters of water, not covering too much of the stalk or it will make the stalk rot faster. It really is only the white ish part on the bottom that needs water to regrow.
  3.  Let it sit on your counter for a few days. Once you start to see a few inches of stalk coming form the top you are ready to plant it!

Pineapple

You will have to be in it for the long haul with this one. It can take up to 3 years for a pineapple to mature!

  1. Twist off the top (crown) of the pineapple.
  2.  Place the white part in a cup of water. Do not allow the water to cover the green parts.
  3. Leave in water until white roots (looks like hair) start to form on the bottom.
  4.  Then plant in the ground! Again, choose a spot (or even pot) it can stay in for a while. Pineapples love full sun.

Papaya

  1. Cut the papaya in half. Scoop out the seeds and put them in a cup.
  2.  Plant a couple seeds in a pot.
  3. Lightly cover the seeds with soil and water.

It is helpful to plant multiple seeds at once because then you have multiple plants and the strongest papaya will grow.

 Lettuce

Very similar to celery!

  1. Chop off the part you will eat and leave a few inchs of the bottom.
  2.  Place the bottom part in a cup of water.
  3. Wait until you start to see an inch or so of growth from your starter. This could take a few days.
  4. Then plant it in your garden.

Recently I have been trying to regrow all of the food that I buy at the store because why not?

If I do not have time to plant it or space I give them to friends and they enjoy having a free plant that they can later eat.

Are you growing anything from kitchen scraps right now? I would love to hear about your food scrap adventures in the comments!
