Even adding a few relaxing elements to your daily routine can enhance your overall well being and this post will ensure that you walk away with a bunch of ideas for bringing this into your at home spa!
This post is all about how to make your shower feel like an eco-friendly spa at home.
Non toxic spa day at home
Non toxic is a bit of a buzzword in the wellness world and it can be confusing what it actually means. The term actually isn’t regulated but it is generally used as a way to mean that it does no harm to your body or the earth which is how it will be used throughout this post.
If you would like to learn more about toxin buildup in your body and the earth I highly recommend checking out the book “The Toxin Solution” by Joseph Pizzorno. It is a quick read but he really dives into the effects of toxins on long-term health issues and even some tips for how to reverse issues and prevent further exposure.
An important point that he made in the book that I want to reiterate before diving deeper into this post is that we can not control all of the toxins we are exposed to! So as you set up your very own calming eco-friendly spa in your home, keep peace as the priority, and don’t stress yourself out too much trying to ensure it is perfect!
*Your local library probably has a copy of this book but if not, you can find it at the link above.
How to Make Your Space Feel Like an at Home Spa
1. Essential Oils in a Diffuser
Aromatherapy is a beautiful way to tell your body that it is time to calm down and be present for the scents your diffuser emits.
Some popular relaxing essential oil blends you can start with are:
- Lavender
- Chamomille
- Vetiver
Be mindful of where you purchase your essential oils from. I really love Doterra because of how they source their oils and their sustainable practices.
2. Opt for natural candles made from soy or coconut wax to reduce harmful toxins
If essential oils aren’t your thing you can always go for a classic candle but with an eco-friendly twist. Regular candles have harmful chemicals in them that can release toxins into the air that you, your family and your pets breathe.
Instead of picking up a candle from the store check out these candles that use soy or coconut wax instead!

3. Hang Eucalyptus in Your Shower To Release Relaxing Aromas
Eucalyptus is great for relaxation and opening up your sinuses! To receive all of the aromatherapy benefits from this plant you can hang it in your shower and as the temperature in your shower heats up it will release a soothing and spa-like aroma.
Check out your local farmers market to find fresh eucalyptus but if you don’t live in an area that grows it you can find some here.
If you are allergic to eucalyptus or do not like the scent you can also look for shower steamers! They work in a similar way by dissolving and releasing scents as your shower warms up, leaving you in a cloud of peace.
4. Clean with natural products that do not contain harmful toxins
Before starting your spa night, be sure to scrub down your shower with eco-friendly cleaning products!
Here is a quick list of the best eco-friendly shower cleaning products:
- Vinegar and baking soda
- Dr. Bronner’s
- Eco friendly scrub brush
Using a simple and nontoxic cleaning routine is best for the earth and your health.
5. Zero waste fill up thrifted pump containers
To get the exact aesthetic that you’re looking for you can thrift pump containers that fit your bathroom’s style! This uplifts your space by making everything look organized which can destress your mind.
The best part is you can simply bring these containers to your local zero waste store to fill up with body soaps and scrubs. If you don’t have a zero waste store nearby you can opt for concentrated body care products that dissolve in water that you can refill your containers with!

6. Save your coffee grounds to make a diy shower body scrub
Food waste is a major issue in the U.S.! So by using left over coffee grounds we can reduce the amount of waste that goes to the landfill and extend the life of our food.
All you need is coffee grounds and your favorite carrier oil such as coconut oil. Simply mix these two ingriendients until you reach your desired consistency. Scrub your body with the mixture and then rinse it off!
I would advise only using this scrub on your body rather than your face so you don’t create little tears in the delicate skin on your face!
7. Maintain a minimalist shower routine and remove clutter
This tip is a mixture of personal preference and being helpful to the environment! I totally understand the minimalist style is not for everyone but there is research that shows less clutter is better for your mental health!
Another pro to having fewer beauty products is that a simple shower routine takes fewer resources. Although it can be fun, we really don’t need 900 different scented body washes.
Every time a product is created, it requires a lot of resources (water, energy, emissions from transportation etc.) to create these products.
So by only using what we need we can slow down consumption which lets the earth take a deep breath as well. As we heal ourselves with self care practices, we can simultaneously heal the earth.
8. Decorate your shower with plants
A big part of giving your home that spa-like feeling is decorating your space to reflect peace. For a natural look, you can opt for adding some greenery to your shower! Aside from hanging Eucalyptus, these are some great plants that love a steamy shower as well:
- Snake plant
- Boston fern
- Peace Lily
