In order to take better care of the earth, we have to take good care of ourselves and the best way is through eco friendly self care practices! I truly believe that the more time we spend interacting with nature, the more connected we will feel with it and want to help take care of it. The same logic goes with our selves. The more time we spend taking care of ourselves, the more care we will feel towards ourselves and the better we will feel overall. So why not combine taking care of the earth and ourselves?!
This post will show you some eco friendly self care practices that will help you take care of yourself while helping the earth. Hopefully after reading this post you will feel inspired to incorporate your passion for sustainable living in all parts of your life, even your self care routine!
So quick disclaimer, these are some of my favorite ways to destress with the planet in mind but do what feels right for you! Self care doesn’t have to look any particular way. Also, self care comes in many forms such as spiritual, mental, emotional, physical self care etc. so keep a diverse set of ideas in your self care kit to best support yourself. Find what works best for you and your lifestyle and practice self care regularly!
This post is all about eco friendly self care practices.
The Best Eco Friendly Self Care Activities
1. Walk around your neighborhood, park or forest
Exercise is a great form of self care! Getting our bodies moving, getting fresh air and seeing more than the inside of our home is great for the mind and body.
Literally just walking out your door and walking around your neighborhood is great but if you have a park or place to hike nearby and are able to submerge yourself in nature, that’s even better!
Actually making time to go outdoors and appreciate it can go a long way!
2. Make a new plant based meal
If you have the free time, cooking can be a very relaxing process. In a way it can turn into a mindfulness activity too.
Try looking up some plant based recipes or pick up a vegan cookbook from the library! The meal doesn’t have to be fancy but trying a new plant based dish can help you to add more plant based meals to your life which is great for the planet!
3. Organize and clean your home with natural products
Self care is not just bubble baths and face masks! A big part of self care is taking care of things that make you feel well and live peacefully. Everyone is different but for me I cannot relax if my space is a mess. Seeing piles of clutter or dust stresses me out! It may just be a virgo thing haha.
Anyways, spend some time organizing and cleaning your home. I have plenty of posts on eco friendly cleaning products and tips that you can check out if you are looking for inspiration!
4. Read a book on sustainability
Reading is a great mindfulness activity because all you can really focus on is the book in front of you rather than to do lists or whatever else is stressing you out! It helps you slow down, sit and rest your body. Maybe even enjoy a cup of tea while you’re at it!

5. Order natural products ahead of time so less stress later
This eco friendly self care tip may surprise you! But yes, spending time prepping things you may need in the future is a great form of self care.
It will help you feel better later on when your past self was looking out for you! Another benefit to doing this is that when you run out of something you don’t end up buying the unsustainable or plastic item at the last minute since you already set yourself up with the eco friendly option!
Of course this can come with an upfront cost which may not be accessible to everyone.

6. Try meditation or yoga outside
There are alot of different ways to practice meditation. It isn’t just about sitting in a quiet room with your eves closed and your back hurting from sitting for so long.
You can also make your way outside and simply stare at a natural space. Humans have been doing for centuries!
Some ways to meditate outside:
- Watching clouds pass by
- Watching snow fall
- Watching waves at the beach
- Watching branches sway in the wind
- Watching birds or squirrels play
7. Watch a documentary on sustainability
Relaxing on the couch with a snack and watching something on the tv is a great way to slow down. I feel like this may be a more obvious one haha.
To make it more eco friendly, you could check out this list of documentaries that focus on sustainability! Some of these cover heavier topics but others are more light hearted. Either way, mental stimulation (or learning something new) is a great way to practice self care.
Eco Friendly Documentaries:
- Cowspiracy
- What The Health
- Our Planet
- Seaspiracy
- The True Cost
- Life in Color
- The Game Changers
- Black Fish
- Minimalism
8. Do a face mask or spend extra time on your sustainable skincare routine
The face mask is like the current cover girl for self care routines haha But they are very relaxing so don’t feel bad for indulging in them!
If face masks aren’t your thing you can always spend extra time on your skincare routine!
Sustainable skincare self care ideas:
- Self massage with coconut oil
- Bubble bath with eco friendly bath salts
- Laying down and putting organically grown cucumbers on your eyes. Kidding but not haha
- Buying a new sustainable skincare product you’ve had your eye on

9. Catch up with a friend and pick up trash
Spending time with loved ones is a great way to take care of yourself. Sometimes it can be easy to isolate when you’re not feeling well but spending time with the people that love you can go a long way!
Another benefit to this tip is that by actively picking up trash, you will feel like you actually helped the earth. Helping people, the earth or animals just feels good. It makes you feel good about yourself and reminds you that you are a good person with a big heart for something outside of yourself!
