Minimalism and organizing your small bedroom

There are SO many different creative ways to organize a room for it to feel larger and more functional. Here are some general things to keep in mind when going through this list of small bedroom organization hacks:

  • Visual clutter will make your space feel cramped. Putting things in bins, boxes and drawers will go a long way
  • A small room means small items! Try your best to find smaller-sized furniture (ex. Smaller bed) and organizers that leave enough space for living
  • The best way to keep an organized bedroom is to be mindful of only keeping things you love and use regularly
  • Prioritize multifunctional pieces and repurpose items from other areas of your home to organize your room (ex. A bed frame with storage space)

The Best Small Bedroom Organization Ideas

1. Use multi-purpose furniture to create extra space

Since there is less space, you really have to find ways to maximize every single piece of furniture in versatile ways.

Lift your bed off the floor with bed risers to slip under-bed storage bins underneath. Plastic bins with wheels work great because you can slide them in and out and stack them.

Ottomans and benches make great seating while also being perfect for hiding items out of the way.

Foldable furniture will be your best friend! Make use of foldable chairs and desks that you can store in your closet or under your bed when not in use.

2. Make the most of vertical space

Since a small bedroom has very limited floor space be sure to make the most of your walls and vertical space.

Anything from tall dressers or wardrobes are helpful to incorporate since they can offer tons of storage.

Even floating shelves above your bed are a great way to include extra storage space for books or decor.

3. Commit to a decluttering schedule that works for you

This is probably the most important tip on the list! Be sure to declutter regularly

Maybe that’s twice a year or a sweep-through once per month. Either way, your space will feel a lot more spacious if you only have what you truly need in it.

Also! Be mindful when shopping and think of if you have the space to store the items you are adding to your cart. This will help your budget and peace of mind.

4. Choose the right color palette and patterns for a cohesive and simple look

If you love bright colors and fun patterns skip this tip! Truly choose the decor that will work best for your space.

If you are trying to make your space feel more calm, I highly suggest choosing a simple and calm color palette. Neutrals and light pastels work great for this!

Then you can add in subtle patterns here and there. This will truly help your space feel less overwhelming.

5. Add multiple mirrors to create depth and make good use of natural light

This tip is not necessary at all for organizing your space but it will make it feel more spacious.

I love to add a full-length mirror to get ready in. Then add a mirror on your desk or hanging on the wall.

This helps the light to reflect all around your room and open it up a bit!

6. How to organize your small closet for easy access

Most small bedrooms are accompanied by small closets! What will help the most is again, only owning what you truly need.

Once you get your closest down to what you actually wear and what you really love I guarantee there will be less to organize

Ideas for DIY closet systems:

  • Folded clothes on shelves or in bins (label the bins!)
  • Tension rods to hang clothes. You can add multiple!
  • A small drawer in your closet if it fits!
  • Vacuum seal seasonal clothes
  • Use slim hangers to really maximize space
  • A small shoe rack or basket for most used shoes
  • Over-the-door organizer for small things like jewelry, scarves (can be rolled), hats etc.

7. Keep as much off the floor as you can to make the most of your small space

Lighting and furniture is mostly what takes up floor space in a small bedroom. Instead, opt for wall-mounted lights or string lights rather than bulky floor lamps.

Even consider getting floating furniture like nightstands and desks that you can attach to the wall. These are great because they keep the floor space free and make your room feel less cramped.

8. Not all open spaces need to be filled up

If you love home decor and interior design, it can be so easy to see blank spaces as an opportunity to add something cute.

To ensure your space doesn’t look or feel overwhelming allow some blank space. Balance is the key to a cohesive space!

9. Use a few organizers but don’t go overboard

This list is full of different organizers and storage containers. Don’t feel pressured to use everything on this list or that you see on other bedroom organization lists!

Oddly enough, all of the storage containers can end up creating more clutter if not used properly. Start with what you already own and add storage containers and organizers as you go.

10. Choose a slender bedside table and other furniture

Keep an eye out at thrift stores for slender bookshelves that can be repurposed as a bedside table. This is the perfect way to store your favorite books while also having a place next to your bed to keep all of your essentials.

Bar carts or rolling carts work perfectly as bedside tables!

11. Make the most of lighting to open up the space

Just like mirrors, light will naturally open up your space and make it feel less cluttered. Go for light curtains that offer privacy but allow sunlight to flow in.

If you don’t have many windows use a mixture of lighting options (other than just your overhead light) to enhance the cozy vibes of your space.

12. Be intentional about decorative items

I love the minimalism concepts but I also love a cozy bedroom!

There’s nothing wrong with having things in your room just because they are beautiful. Just be sure to only have the items you truly love!

13. Opt for less furniture

Furniture is wonderful because it offers plenty of storage space. Be mindful of if you really need certain pieces though!

If an extra tray or table is just going to turn into a spot where items are piled, consider not adding the furniture to the space.

Use these tips to arrange and decorate your small bedroom to ensure your space feels organized and not cluttered! Everyone’s bedroom layout will be different but by being mindful of what you buy and how you organize it in your room you should be able to create a space that feels just right.

You don’t need to be an interior designer. All you need is a little creativity and some clever storage solutions and you’ll make it work!
