Sustainable Apartment Checklist

1. Food storage containers

Having the right kind of food storage containers can really help mitigate the food waste that your home produces. As long as you remember your leftovers!

Opting for high quality non plastic food containers helps to keep food fresh and organized. These are two of my absolute favorite brands! I have had one of my Ukonserve containers for over 5 years at this point and I still pack my lunch in it to this day!

Stasher bags are incredible for storing leftover veggies, freezing fruit and many other non food related uses (i.e. keeps electronic cords organized, pencil case, etc.)

2. Non toxic cleaning supplies

Do you ever get a headache after cleaning your home?

It may be from the harsh chemicals found in your cleaning products! Instead, check out these brands that use earth friendly ingredients and low waste packaging.

I have personally tried Dropps and I absolutely love them! The other cleaning products I use are from my local zero waste shop-but these are great options that can be delivered to your door if you don’t have a zero waste shop near you!

3. Plastic free cleaning tools

Minimizing plastic wherever you can is great for the planet. Even when it comes to your cleaning tools!

A great place to get practically free cleaning tools is by cutting up old towels and tshirts. Instead of getting all the new plastic cleaning gadgets that come out just use what you have!

If you don’t have any old towels/shirts/bedsheets there are lots of great sustainably made cleaning tools. They can be found here

4. Thrifted mugs and dishwater

If you have been to a thrift store then you know just how much home goods, specifically dish ware and mugs, there are!

No matter what kind of home decor style you have going on in your apartment, you will most likely be able to find some second hand items to complete your look.

Choosing second hand is great for the environment because instead of these items going to the landfill they can have a second life in your home. Also, you will have more unique decor since you won’t be furnishing your home from the same big box store as everyone else!

5. Plant based staples for your pantry

Plant based eating uses way less resources than other style of eating! This is great news for the planet because less water, energy and emissions are created thus keeping the planet healthier.

I actually already put together a list of plant based staples that you can check out here! Basically, keeping you kitchen stocked with nutritious food swill set you up for feeling your best and having great options around all the time.

6. Mattress

Haven you heard the quote about investing your money in good shoes and a mattress because you are always in one of them? It’s true! Having a nice mattress can do wonders for your health since it will improve your sleep.

Also, there are random chemicals in mattresses so choosing a cleaner mattress like the Avocado mattress is not only better for you but also the planet!

7. Compost Bin

Did you know that it is possible to compost even if you live in a small space? It is!

Composting is great because it ensures that organic matter is reused by the earth rather than rotting away with trash in the landfill.

This is the compost bin I personally use and it fits perfectly under the sink!

8. Houseplants

So this one isn’t necessarily an essential but they will make your home feel way more “homey”.

Even if you don’t have a green thumb consider picking up an aloe vera plant or a snake plant. They are super difficult to kill! The greenery will brighten your space and I have heard that they clean the air in your apartment. Not sure if it is true but at least your apartment will look more beautiful!

9. Candles

Again, not an essential but who doesn’t love a good candle, especially one that is safe for both you and the planet.

Some candles can be made of some sketchy materials so be sure to choose a candle made from soy or coconut wax that use natural oils for scents.
