The Best Eco friendly Dish Soap Products.
1. No Tox Life Solid Dish Soap Solid Bar
This dish bar soap is definitely my favorite on the list! I absolutely love the concept of dish soap in a bar rather than it being in a plastic bottle. It is such a simple way to have a plastic free kitchen!
I procrastinated on buying a dish block for a while because A. It seemed expensive and B. I didn’t know how to use it .
Little did I know I actually save money using bar dish soap! This is because regular liquid dish soap actually has a significant amount of water in it. Since a dish soap bar is concentrated into a bar, you are only purchasing the product itself. Because of this you only have to use a little bit of the bar at a time and you end up saving money! So yes, dish soap bars are a bigger upfront cost but they do last a long time!
How to use a dish soap bar
- Wet your reusable or compostable dish sponge with warm water.
- Rub your wet sponge on the bar of dish soap. A little goes a long way!
- Scrub your dishes like normal-it really is that easy!
2. Blueland Refillable Dish Soap
Have you ever heard of powdered dish soap?! I certainly never have but it is a really cool concept. Basically, you just sprinkle the powder on your dishes and it has cleaning agents in it that clean your dishes just like regular soap. I could see this option being really helpful for a camping trip or if you just don’t love bar soaps!
If you have tried Blueland’s dish soap powder, please let us know in the comments below! I’m so curious about this one and would love to hear your experience with it.
3. Dr. Bronners Castile Soap
This was one of the very first low waste dish soaps I used! I love Castile soap, especially Dr. Bronners. This soap can be used for many different things and because of this versatility, you end up saving money! This soap also has that classic sudsy lather that you might not find in other eco friendly dish soap options.
They have a lot of scents but I always get the lavender scent because it actually makes washing dishes more relaxing. Who knew a zero waste liquid dish soap could be a part of your self care routine!
The bottles you purchase online can be recycled or upcycled when you’re done using them. A lot of zero waste stores actually carry Castile soap so if you have one in your area you could even refill it there.
This is a cleaning powerhouse that you can use all around your home.
Why I love Dr. Bronners:
- Organic
- Fair for Life Fair Trade certified
- Non GMO certified
- Leaping Bunny certified
- Vegan ingredients
- Company has been around since the 1940’s!
4. Clean Cult Liquid Dish Soap
So many eco friendly companies are starting to package their products in cartons lately and I love it! It is a great alternative to plastic bottles and still maintains the efficacy of the product.
If you want to just stick with a classic liquid dish soap, Clean Cult is the one for you! Basically, you can pour the soap from the carton into a glass pump bottle or just leave it in the carton and pour that way! This helps to cut down on so much plastic waste from plastic dish soap bottles.
They have three different beautiful scents too which include blue sage, grapefruit basil, and lemongrass to ensure your dirty dishes end up smelling pleasant.
Why I love Clean Cult:
- Recyclable containers
- Paper based packaging
- Cruelty free
- Biodegradable ingredients
5. Package Free Dish Soap Block
I love package free shop so much! Basically, any zero waste item can be found on their website and they even have a store in New York you can visit too.
They offer a round dish soap bar that also comes in a two-pack option.
This dish soap actually has a light citrusy smell to it rather than the other dish soap bars that I have mentioned so far that do not have a smell!
6. Meliora
Ok last dish wash bar suggestion! I have yet to try this one because I have really loved the other dish soap bars I have mentioned.
Meliora dish soap comes in two scents which are lemon and unscented!
Things I love about Meliora:
- Cruelty free
- B corp certified
- Leaping bunny certified
- Women owned family business
- Donate 2% of sales to environmental non profits
- Ships in 100% recyclable and plastic free packaging
7. Ethique Dish Soap Concentrate
This dish soap is sort of a mix between dish soap bars and liquid dish soap! Basically, you break up the dish soap bar, add boiling water to let it dissolve, and then pour the mixture into a reusable pump container and it’s just like liquid soap. The bar comes in paper packaging so you don’t have a plastic water bottle to worry about!
Zero Waste Dishwasher Detergent
I actually do not have a dishwasher so I honestly haven’t used these yet! I can say that I LOVE the Dropps laundry detergent so I assume the rest of their product line would be great as well.
All three of these companies have high standards for their ingredients and packaging so I am pretty sure their products are top notch too! If I ever use any of these products I will update this post and let you all know how they are. Just wanted to give ya’ll a starting off point if you have been looking for eco friendly dishwasher products!

Zero Waste Kitchen Dishwashing Accessories
To complete the list of my favorite dish soaps I thought it could be helpful to include what kind of tools I use to wash dishes. These are my go to zero waste dishwashing tools that I find super helpful!
Reusable Dish Sponge
At this point, I really despise regular sponges. Not only are they made of plastic and take forever to disintegrate (if ever) they are also kind of nasty. It’s basically a wet lump of germs sitting on your kitchen counter.
I really love using washable cloths for dish washing. That way I can wring out excess water when I’m done using it and just throw it in the laundry with my other cleaning items.
Ok so it is still a wet lump sitting on my counter but at least it gets deep cleaned once in a while!
Compostable Dish Sponge
If you really love a classic sponge (no judgment!) then check out these compostable sponges. Instead of your plastic sponge never going away, these will eventually disintegrate! These are perfect for getting that stubborn grime and excess grease.

Silicone Bottle Dish Brush
I really love this silicone bottle brush. I tried to use the zero waste aesthetically pleasing wooden ones but since most don’t have a finish on them they end up molding. Maye I just chose the wrong one but the silicone ones seem cleaner to me!
Kitchen Towels
Let go of paper towels! They are super wasteful when you could just use a towel that can be washed and reused. Of course, certain kitchen tasks may require a paper towel but definitely not drying dishes or cleaning countertops! A clean cloth is just as effective.
Pump for Liquid Dish Soap
If you prefer a liquid dish soap, having a nice pump to put your refills in is essential. I really love the look of the glass amber pumps! They basically go with every style of kitchen decor too.
Dish Soap Bar Holder
One of the most important things with dish soap bars is to not let them sit in a puddle of water because that is basically letting your money go down the drain. Find a great dish soap holder that your dish soap bar can dry out on in between dishwashing.
There are plenty of cute bar holders but I personally use a small bowl that I thrifted! Supporting companies that are doing great things for eco friendly shopping is good but shopping second hand is a great place to start too.
The soap dish holder pictured above is made from sustainably grown bamboo and decomposes at the end of it’s life!
Why should you use an eco-friendly dish soap rather than more traditional dish soaps?
- Use natural ingredients to help minimize toxic chemicals in your home
- Can be more cost-effective
- Generally multi-purpose and can be used in other areas of your cleaning routine
- Cut down on plastic use in your home to reach your sustainable living goals
Have you used any of the sustainable alternatives on this list? Please let us know in the comments below! Also, if you have any questions about how to use the products please don’t hesitate to ask! Sometimes zero waste swaps can be intimidating and confusing so I totally get it!
