Benefits of bamboo for DIY backyard projects

  • More sustainable: Bamboo grows very quickly! It only takes about 3-5 years to harvest it compared to more traditional wood.
  • It’s strong and durable. As long as it is treated properly, it can last outside for years and years to come.
  • Versatility: You can use it for so many unique and creative DIY projects. It’s flexible so you can bend it into whatever shape you need for your project.
  • Lightweight: Bamboo is much lighter than traditional wood. If you are doing any DIY projects by yourself it’s much easier to carry.
  • It’s beautiful! Whether you buy your bamboo bright green or the light brown neutral color it can pair so beautifully with many backyard aesthetics.

Best Bamboo Backyard Ideas

    1. Bamboo fence ideas

Lucky for you I already wrote a whole post full of inspiration for backyard bamboo fences! You can check it out here.

Whether you want to keep your pets inside your yard or critters out of your garden there are so many beautiful bamboo fences you can create.

Things to consider when building a bamboo fence:

    • Bamboo fences work best in mild to warm climates since that’s where it naturally grows. Make sure to treat it if you live in a super cold or rainy area because it will mold or termites may find a home in it.
    • If you live in a windy area use cement or metal to keep the fence secure.

      2. Bamboo outdoor furniture

The possibilities are endless when it comes to bamboo furniture and luckily you can find it at tons of garden centers and thrift stores.

I love the tropical and beachy feel that it gives to a space. If your other backyard decor is darker, bamboo can help to lighten up your space.

Pair it with floral or beach-themed pillows to stay within the coastal theme. Try to find these furniture pieces at your local yard sale or thrift store:

      • bench
      • chairs
      • picnic table
      • ottoman
      • side tables
      • back porch swing

        3. Bamboo privacy screen

If you want your backyard to feel like your own oasis, pick up some privacy screens made of bamboo.

        They will still let a bit of light through so if you have plants near them they will still get light. But overall a bamboo privacy screen can keep out nosy neighbors (;

I love that these are super lightweight so you can easily install them in an afternoon!

          4. Bamboo plant stand

          bamboo plant stand

If you have a patio or back porch behind your house, a bamboo plant stand can make the perfect addition.

Rather than having all of your plants stacked at the same level, plant stands can create various levels for your at-home jungle.

Be sure to poke holes in the bottom of your pots so that there is drainage. Or be sure to not overwater them so the bottom doesn’t get soggy.

          5. Bamboo pendant lights over the outdoor eating area

Aren’t these lights stunning?! I’m actually obsessed with them. Rather than just your normal porch lights, string up some large bamboo pendant lights instead.

All you need is a simple hook to suspend the lights from your porch ceiling. This is a small addition but it can really take your outdoor dining area to the next level!

            6. Bamboo Trellis

If you love to garden you will love this idea. With just a few sticks of bamboo, you can create a structure to hold your vining plants.

This keeps the leaves and produce off the soil. This helps each leaf to get enough sunlight and ensures your fruits or veggies don’t get soggy in the soil.

You can secure your trellis together with metal wire, twine, fishing wire, or hammer nails into it.

What plants would use a bamboo trellis

            • Cucumbers
            • Tomatoes
            • Peas
            • Beans
            • Squash
            • Melons
            • Grapes

              7. Wall for vertical gardening

If you have a small backyard you can still garden! Just create a vertical garden wall using bamboo secured closely together.

Then drill some holes where you can add planter boxes into them. You can also create a checkered shape using bamboo if you don’t have enough bamboo to make an enclosed wall. With the checkered option, it is easier to hang baskets or hooks to hold planters.

                8. Bamboo raised beds and garden edging

Keep those pesky weeds out by creating raised garden beds. You can stack the bamboo horizontally to create each box on the ground.

If you want to keep weeds from getting into your garden bed create a platform with bamboo laying closely together on the bottom of your box. Then fill it in with soil like normal!

                  9. Bamboo planters (horizontal or vertical)

If you can find larger bamboo in your area, you can cut them in half to create the perfect raised planters.

Similar to raised garden beds, these are the perfect way to keep weeds out of your fruits and vegetables.

If you’re not super into gardening, these are a great beginner-friendly option since all of your plants are contained.

                  10. Bamboo shower

Transport yourself to the tropics every time you use your outdoor shower but enjoy the privacy of a bamboo wall!

Make sure to seal the bamboo so it doesn’t get moldy. Between a bamboo wall, a thrifted shower faucet, and some stone pavers you have the perfect outdoor shower to enjoy.

                    11. Tags for garden plants

Cut small pieces of bamboo to create plant tags to identify the plants in your garden. You can etch the wood or paint the name of your plants on the bamboo.

You could also cut a hole in the bamboo and add metal tags to the top of them. That way when a new season comes you can interchange the tags for your new plants.

                      12. Towel rack for by the pool

If you have a pool, a bamboo towel rack is the perfect way to store your towels as they dry out in the sun.

Make sure the rack you choose has a coating on the bamboo so it doesn’t get moldy.

                      13. Bamboo lanterns

Pick up some outdoor bamboo lights to line the pathway around your home or garden. You could even insert solar-powered lights to stay within your eco-friendly goals.

This might seem like a small touch but it can really enhance the look of your lights to have an intricate cover over them.

                        14. Bamboo birdhouses

Give the birds in your neighborhood a shady spot to relax in. Bamboo birdhouses are great because they are not super heavy.

That means you can fill them up with more bird food than traditional birdhouses!

                          15. DIY bamboo rain gutter on chicken house

Cut large pieces of bamboo in half to create a rain gutter for your chicken coop or rabbit cage.

If you enjoy decorating your pet’s home, this is the perfect inexpensive way to add a sort of practical and cute touch to their home.

                            16. Bamboo wind chimes

                            bamboo wind chimes

Bamboo gently hitting each other sounds so peaceful in the wind. Transport that sound to your backyard by creating or buying some bamboo windchimes.

If you don’t love the sharp tone of metal windchimes you will love the relaxing song of bamboo windchimes.

                              17. Decorative bamboo ladder

Create a cozy vibe on your back patio or porch with a bamboo ladder. I love to use these to hang blankets on cool nights. You can also add shelves to them to add outdoor decor or plants.

Curl up with a good book and take a swing inside a bamboo nest. This swing looks delicate but bamboo is strong so it is perfectly fine for adults to use!

You can add in a cushion on the bottom and possibly on the sides since the bamboo backing isn’t always the most comfortable to lay against.

                                19. Bamboo accent wall

Include a pop of the tropics on the walls of your home. Even if you don’t want your whole back porch to be covered in bamboo, a hint of it can break up boring walls and add a bit of texture.

If you are looking for a backsplash for an outdoor kitchen or gardening area, bamboo can also add a unique look to that space.

                                    20. Bamboo plants in pots

Simply include some potted bamboo! House plants count as decor and look great as patio decor.

Be sure to keep your bamboo plant out of direct sunlight. Make sure it is consistently watered so that the soil is consistently moist but don’t let the roots get waterlogged. Bamboo can really take over your yard if it isn’t contained so keep it in pots!
