There are SO many baby products marketed to new families but what baby products should you start out with? Are there eco friendly baby products that work the same as traditional baby products? There are!

This list may be short and sweet but it covers the basics of the best eco friendly baby products on the market that are made from durable materials that will hopefully last for all of your babies. Start with this list and add on products when needed. It can be so easy to buy everything for your little one but unfortunately the stuff you don’t use will end up in the landfill.

This list is a great starting point for your eco friendly baby registry and you can add onto your baby gear checklist from here!

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor. I am a nanny who has helped raise lots of babies and has tried lots of different baby and kids products (:

This post is all about the best sustainable baby products for new parents.

The Best Eco-Friendly Baby Products For Eco Conscious Parents

1. Water Wipes Eco friendly Baby Wipes

Some wipes can be filled with too many scents and additives which can irritate your babies skin. These wipes may not have the pretty scents to mask blow outs but they are basic, effective and earth friendly.

Water wipes are made mostly of water and a bit of fruit extract. Because of this ingredient makeup it minimizes the likelihood of rashes!

Of course everyone is different but these wipes are definitely worth a try. Best of all, when you are done using them they are able to be composted at home

This is a popular brand for a reason!

Why we love water wipes:

  • Made of only two ingredients: water & fruit extract.
  • Vegan and cruelty free
  • Recyclable boxes & bags are partially made from post consumer products.
  • Wipes are able to be home composted
  • Wipes are plastic free

2. Boon Nursh Silicone Eco friendly Baby Bottles

Silicone is an incredible material in terms of durability and sustainability. It withstands both cold and hot temperatures and won’t mold out of shape. Silicone is not perfect in terms of sustainability due to manufacturing. Compared to plastic it is made from a more plentiful resource (silica-found in sand and quartz) unlike plastic that is made from crude oil.

For full transparency, these bottles are not plastic free. They just use a minimal amount of plastic. The outer portion of the bottle is plastic but it is BPA free and the liquid will not touch that part.

Are these bottles perfect, 100% sustainable and plastic free? No but they are a great, affordable option that uses less plastic than traditional plastic bottles. Definitely worth taking a look at to see if it will work for your family!

Another great alternative is glass bottles but because they are easily breakable I don’t think they are the best alternative in terms of functionality.

3. Unscented Dr.Bronners Liquid Soap

Is there anything Dr. Bronners soap can’t clean? Their castile soap is incredible because it is gentle enough for bath time but you can also use it for laundry, as an all purpose cleaner and more!

They suggest only using their non scented liquid soap for babies and to be careful it doesn’t get in your little one’s eyes since it isn’t tear free.

Why we love Dr. Bronners:

  • 100% post consumer recycled plastic packaging
  • use organic and fair trade ingredients
  • Use of solar panels at production factories

If you have a zero waste store near you it probably has castile soap at it. That way you can bring your own bottle to refill. If not, Dr. Bronner has started to sell their soap in cardboard boxes which is a great low waste alternative.

4. Honest Eco friendly Diapers

Did you know the actress, Jessica Alba, has a whole line of eco friendly personal care items, cleaning supplies and makeup?!

It is quite an impressive line but best of all they also sell durable and beautiful disposable diapers. Seriously, all of the different patterns on the diapers are incredibly adorable.

Luckily, Honest diapers can be found online from Amazon, at Target and Walmart so they are easy to find!

Why we love Honest diapers:

  • Cruelty free and not tested on animals
  • Use a bio-based core of sustainably-harvested fluff pulp and plant-derived materials.
  • No latex, fragrance, chlorine or parabens
  • Minimal material used in each diaper
  • Diaper boxes are made from 100% post consumer material and can be recycled

5. Cloth diapers

reusable diapers

So cloth diapers can be slightly controversial because, put simply, they are not as simple as their disposable option. But for years and years many families relied on cloth diapers to take care of their kids.

Considering that using cloth diapers requires more laundry and isn’t as convenient for outings, there are still some benefits to choosing to use cloth diapers rather than traditional baby diapers.

Here are some of the pros of cloth diapers:

  • You only have to buy one set so you save money in the long run not buying diapers each month.
  • Helps with early potty training since your baby can feel the wetness rather than it being absorbed in the diaper
  •  You will cut down on SO much plastic waste
  • You can find them in natural materials like organic cotton which is great since it is on your baby’s skin
  • They come in adorable patterns and you can support small businesses that sew them
  • If you haven’t been convinced yet, you can always see if there are cloth diaper services offered in your town. That way you can reap all of them benefits of cloth diapers but you don’t have to do the cleaning.

Teach Go Green has done an incredible job of explaining cloth diapers if you are even a bit curious about it and want to learn more.

6. Dropps Sensitive Skin Laundry Detergent

a non toxic laundry room

Dropps is by far the best eco friendly laundry detergent on the market! The detergent comes in convenient pods that you pop in the washer with your clothes and that’s it!

The detergent is toxin free and comes in recyclable packaging. They even have a line specifically for sensitive skin that is fragrance free. This is the detergent I personally use for me and have never had any skin irritations and everything comes out perfectly clean!

Why we love Dropps laundry detergent:

  • Certified b corporation
  • Plant and mineral based ingredients
  • Carbon neutral shipping
  • Cruelty free & vegan
  • Manufactured in the USA

7. Organic burp cloth

These burp cloths are SO incredibly beautiful. If you like that natural, earthy aesthetic then you will be obsessed with these burp cloths.

Aside from design, what about functionality?

These burp cloths are massive! Not like the size of a towel. They are still small enough to conveniently pack and take around on outings but they are also big enough to catch any extra goo.

Best of all, they are made with organic cotton. Opting for sustainable materials like organic cotton really helps to minimize the harmful chemicals that cotton is grown with. That is better for the farmers, the environment, and animals.

What other eco friendly baby products should you have ready?

Unfortunately, there aren’t sustainable baby product alternatives for everything. I think within the sustainable living world it can be easy to lean too far into perfectionism. It is important that we make choices to lower our carbon footprint when possible. All we can do is continue learning and working together to find green solutions to lower our environmental impact.

I wanted to recommend products I think are incredible and if I find others I will be sure to add them to this list. Or if you know of any please put it in the comments below to help other families!

Here are a few other basic baby essentials I hope to find sustainable alternatives to recommend if you know of any!

  • Car seats
  • Diaper bag
  • Baby Carrier

  • Crib mattress
  • Wooden toys
