The Best Tips For Eco Friendly Parenting Tips
1. You need less than you think
There is SO much marketing directed to new parents (new moms especially). At such a vulnerable and confusing time it can feel like you need to buy everything. Whether the mindset is just in case we need it, having a social media aesthetically pleasing baby or preparing for the worst case scenario.
Sometimes it can feel good when embarking on a new journey to prepare with buying things but it is a false comfort.
I’m not saying that you have to have a minimalist lifestyle but you can also buy things as you go rather than being over whelmed with a bunch of baby gadgets that don’t get used and end up in the landfill eventually. This will help to keep your home organized and peaceful while also minimizing the impact on the planet.
Also, who doesn’t like to gift their loved ones gifts for their new little one? Your friends and family (and maybe even aquaintences!) will most likely be very excited to shower you and your little one with gifts. Be mindful of the abundance entering into your home. Don’t let it be spoiled by turning into overwhelm.
2. Prioritize reusable products and find eco friendly disposable products when needed
In the eco world, cloth diapering is a hot topic of debate! I will admit, it is kind of gross and obviously takes more effort than simply using disposable diapers.
But! You will go through TONS of diapers. Which unfortunatley means that TONS of diapers end up in the landfill every year. If you have the capacity to do so, cloth diapering is an incredible way to minimize your household waste.
Even if cloth diapering gets a hard no from you, there are other zero waste baby products you could use that will minimize waste but aren’t as messy as cloth diapering.

3. Build community to share knowledge and products
Everyone’s family is different. Communities have greatly shifted throughout history to unfortunately not be as supportive to new families. Having a baby is A LOT and that is why it is so crucial to build community as challenging as that may be in today’s times.
Not only does having a community help so much emotionally as a new parent but it can also help financially and environmentally. Swapping baby products and eventually other kid products with family members can really help to minimize items ending up in the trash.
Having support while you clean all those cloth diapers is helpful too! Maybe you and a few other parent friends can meal prep organic baby food together to save time. You get the point!
Doing things the eco friendly way can increase your workload at times but if you build a community to help you it is possible!
4. Focus on whole foods when possible rather than packaged baby food
Eating a plant based diet has been shown time and time again that it has major positive impacts on the environment and out health. We also all know that upping our intake of fruits and vegetables is never a bad idea.
Even if you are not vegan or planning on raising a vegan children, you can still set them up for success by ensuring they have lots of fresh organic produce available!
If you are able to prepare your own locally grown organic purees then that is wonderful! If not, no judgement, there are plenty of pre made options that work great as well! Just do what you can, listen to your pediatricians guidance and find foods that your little one loves!

5. Spend time outdoors to strengthen their connection to the earth
This one might be the most hippy dippy tip on the list. But if you’ve made it this far it most likely won’t scare you away!
Starting your child’s connection with mother earth as an infant is an incredible gift you can give them. As disconnected as we are from the natural world, it is really an honor to hold a space deep in your heart where you feel safe and at home in the outdoors. That connection can be created even when your child is a baby!
Kids learn through their senses. Allowing your kids to get dirty, listen to bird songs, nap in the shade of a tree etc. can set them up to later to feel the same connection your probably have with the earth and the fire to protect it! Raising little tree huggers is a beautiful thing!
