How do I make my front porch private?
1. Outdoor privacy screen (great for renters!)
If you love to curl up on your front porch all throughout the day, you will need a way to adjust the amount of sunlight that is hitting you.
Whether you want to use a screen that rolls down from the ceiling or a screen that you can hide away, this option is the most obvious but the most practical front porch privacy solution!

Make sure to choose one that is water resistant, doesn’t completely block out all of the sun, and fastens properly to your porch!
A privacy screen like this one is great because you can attach it to your front porch railing and then use plants and decor in front of it to hide it! These are also great if you have pets because then they can’t hop off your porch. If you want maximum privacy, a roll-up screen will be your best bet!
2. Front porch privacy wall for a medium level of privacy
If you own your home, you can install a privacy wall that is built into your porch. These are great because once you spend the time building it, you really don’t have to worry about it again.
You might have to do minimal repairs or add sealant, but for the most part, you have a sturdy wall to make your front porch feel more complete.
I love this modern design because you can hang decor on them, plants, or even a projector screen for an outdoor movie night! Whatever works best for your personal style.

3. Free-standing privacy wall as a decorative element for your private space
A free-standing wall is the best of a privacy screen, mixed with the wall I described before. You get plenty of coverage, but if you need to rearrange or move homes, you have that option!
This black metal privacy screen is sturdy enough to withstand the breeze. I love that it’s a solid color and can hide away behind the pops of color that you will probably add with your front porch decor.
When choosing a privacy wall, try to think long-term. Does the region you live in get tons of snow or rain? If so, a metal screen will work better and not have to be replaced as much as other options like a bamboo screen. This is better for your wallet and the planet!

4. Front porch seating area with outdoor furniture
These front porch privacy solutions are a great way to have some distractions for your front windows, but also for when you are relaxing on your porch.
A few ways to use seating as a privacy solution would be to get floor seating, lower chairs, or seating that has higher backs on them.
I’m also obsessed with these hanging egg chairs that you can add covers or blankets to. They’re weather-resistant, so they’re perfectly fine to keep outdoors!

5. Outdoor curtains and pergola drapes for curb appeal
When I picture a tropical vacation, I think of porches and patios draped with white curtains. Why not bring that dreamy space to your own home?!
They’re a small touch, but they can really elevate the look of your space.
Don’t just use any old regular curtains! Unless you want to wash them all the time, because yes, they will get dirty. Instead, opt for these waterproof curtains that are thick enough to withstand the outdoor elements!

6. DIY front porch privacy screenÂ
Don’t feel pressured to go out and buy expensive privacy screens. You can easily upcycle items you already have to make your own screens and walls for your front porch.
You can break down shipping pallets that you may have from moving or can find at a local restaurant. If you have bamboo or another light wood in your yard, you can create a unique and practical front porch privacy wall from that.
Even upcycling some old windows, painting them, and hanging them on your porch could be an affordable option.
7. Natural barrier using hanging porch plants
Create a mini jungle on your front porch. You don’t have to be a plant lover to make it work. There are plenty of low-maintenance hanging plants that you can throw up to create a sense of privacy, but still enjoy regular breezes since your porch isn’t completely blocked off.
Front porch privacy plants in various sizes
Lush and large plants like ferns or vining plants like Jasmine will take up a lot of space to help your space feel more serene. Even adding a few topiary plants on your front porch can create more privacy.
Of course, this isn’t the most effective privacy option on the list, but in combination with a few other ideas it can help your outdoor space look cohesive and homey.

 8. Front porch lattice panels for an outdoor screen
Keep it classic with lattice panels! Similar to the wood privacy wall I mentioned before, this option can be used to hold plants and decor.
Lattice is normally used for vining plants like English Ivy, Jasmine, Boston Ivy, or Honeysuckle. Just imagine sitting on your porch and wafting in these light floral scents! Decor is so much more than just what it looks like. It’s about the feeling you create as well.
Privacy walls and pretty smelling flowers can really tie this outdoor space together into a spot you yearn to hang in.
But you can always mix things up and attach shelves or hooks to the lattice for extra storage or to display your favorite decor.
9. Bushes and tall trees to blend in with your front yard
Again, don’t just use one method on this list! If you just have a porch with a privacy wall your home may look a bit industrial.
Soften things up with extra greenery like large bushes.
My absolute favorite flower/bush/ plant is the hydrangea! They come in the most beautiful soft pastel colors and grow pretty wide and tall. You will get coverage on your porch but in a pretty way!
Best ornamental grass for privacy
Tall ornamental grasses are another great option for creating a ntaural barrier for added privacy. They might take a bit more maintenance because they can spread but these are some of my favorite ornamental grasses for privacy:
- Pampas grass
- Chinese silver grass
- Umbrella bamboo
- Zebra grass
Best tall plants for balcony privacy
Tall outdoor plants are great because they offer plenty of privacy and are relatively low maintenance, unlike grasses for privacy.
Here are some of my favorite plants for balcony privacy:
- Bamboo
- Weeping fig
- Areca Palm
- Elephant Ear
- Viburnum
 10. Potted plants are great for small spaces
Used raised garden beds, railing garden boxes, or large terracotta pots to take up extra space. If you have a small front porch, you can use slim and tall plant boxes!
This option is relatively cheap because all you need are plants and some thrifted containers to store them in.
If you combine this option with the curtains from earlier, you can easily have a dreamy and budget-friendly front porch privacy option!
It’s tough to create a completely insect-free environment, but adding potted plants like lavender, lemon grass, and mint can help to keep some insects away!

11. Outdoor blinds for front porch privacy and extra sun control
Outdoor roller shades are the perfect way to keep your porch nice and cool. I love that you can adjust them to whatever level you need as well!
The only downside to roll-up screens is that they are probably the most high-maintenance option on this list.
Be sure when you’re not using them to roll them up so they don’t get dirty or dusty. You will have to dust them! Any time it’s super sunny out, take the opportunity to unroll them and let them air out!
*The other popular option I skipped over for this list is automatic outdoor blinds since they can be a splurge!

DIY fence toppers for privacy
To increase the privacy in front of your home, consider adding a DIY fence topper. To give your fence a bit more height, consider adding a trellis (with or without plants) or extra boards.
These options can give your patio privacy without spending a bunch of extra money or needing to be a pro at DIY projects.
Best window film for privacy
This privacy film is perfect for adding a bit more coverage to your outdoor space if you have windows! I love that it also blocks some UV rays and heat as well. If your front porch or patio is enclosed, these films can offer a tough more privacy to relax in!
Hopefully, at least one of these ideas (or a few combined) can bring enough privacy to your outdoor living space. Even a small update like this can make enjoying the natural world and your home a more enjoyable experience!
