Why Use a Flower Frog?

flower frog in a bouquet

Flower frogs aren’t 100% necessary when making a flower arrangement but they make it easier to:

  • Keep flowers standing upright
  • Control spacing and height in arrangements
  • Create a fuller-looking bouquets with fewer stems
  • Arrange flowers without floral foam (less wasteful!)

I personally like the look of flower frogs showing as they add a pop of color and decor to the arrangement but you can also hide them by making them smaller or using extra flowers and leafs.

Why Clay Is Perfect for DIY Flower Frogs

Traditionally, flower frogs are made out of metal or even wood but I love using clay to make them. Either polymer clay (must bake in the overn) or air dry clay will work perfectly for this craft!

Using clay to make flower frogs is ideal for beginners because:

  • It’s forgiving and easy to reshape
  • No special equipment is required (You can buy clay tools or just use items around your home to shape your flower frog. Think markers for rolling pins and cookie cutters for your desired shape.)
  • You can customize size, thickness, and hole placement
  • Clay adds enough weight to help anchor stems

This is the polymer clay I used and was happy with! It comes with a bunch of colors and some simple tools to use as well.

This craft is pretty simple and you only need a few items! Here is what you’ll need:

Easy DIY Flower Frog Ideas

Here are a few different clay flower frog designs, but feel free to let your creativity run wild with your own designs as well!

I’ll walk through the steps for each variation so you can follow along easily.

For all of your designs, once you’re done molding, pop them in the oven as per the direction in the clay booklet (it only takes about 15 minutes in the oven!).

I used parchment paper for easy cleaning and it worked really well! You could also use these reusable silicone mats if you want to reduce some waste!

Ok those are my most important tips based on trial and error, let’s get into some beginner friendly flower frog design ideas!

Simple circular flower frog

A circular shape is the most common for flower frogs. They can be hidden pretty easily as well if you want your flowers to remain the main star of the show!

Simply flatten out a chunk of clay and use a cookie cutter or clay tool to create a circular shape. Use a straw or tool to poke holes throughout your circle.

This is super important so don’t make the same mistake I did (pictured above lol) but make sure the holes are big enough to actually fit flower stems! Seems obvious but when you’re zoning out in crafting mode it can be easy to forget.

Coiled heart flower frog

If you want your arrangement to have a bit of decor, I think making a simple heart is perfect for that! Simply create two long coils of clay and shape them into a heart shape.

Squish them together and again make sure there is enough space for your steps to fit comfortably, yet snug, and uniform inside the flower frog.

Geometric flower frog

If you want a more trendy and modern flower frog you can go for a more geometric shape!

This design also works well if you have a large vase and need to arrange a bunch of flowers! Simply role out on large coil of clay to make the outside square.

Then create smaller coils to create the grid (kind of like making a pie). Make sure to measure out the rows and coloms before squishing them together and popping them in the oven.

Tips for Beginners Working With Clay

This project is meant to be relaxed and forgiving! Imperfections add character and make each flower frog unique, so enjoy the process!

If you don’t love the way they turn out, your beautiful flower arrangement will cover them anyways (:
